Music Discussion [Oct. 3rd, 2005|12:06 am]
Fullspeed Nosebleed - The Sexie Rexie Book Club

When Tim talks about white parents' discomfort with their kids listening to rap and hip hop, I can't help but think that this is not so much a race issue as it is an appropriateness issue. I mean, I can't imagine the same parents being overly concerned if their kids developed a passion for motown or jazz. They wouldn't freak out if they found Temptations or Louis Armstrong or even Toni Braxton CD on their kids' Christmas lists. I'm sure these parents try to keep their kids away from gangsta rap out of racism, though. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the messages of gun violence and misogyny.

A Mod-Type Question for Tracey That I'll Probably Later Delete [Sep. 26th, 2005|02:19 pm]

Hey, Tracey, I should ask: would you rather discuss books as we go along or wait until we're completely done? If we discuss our way through them, we run the risk of not everyone being caught up to the spot we're talking about, but if we wait until everyone's finished, the things we'd like to discuss might not be fresh in our minds. I suppose those who aren't caught up can just wait and voice their opinions when they get to the right spot, yes?

Well, it appears that we rather quickly dropped the conversation about Gathering Blue, but I assume it's because neither trrrracey nor I really liked reading it.

So, I figured I'd go ahead and announce that our next selection is White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son by Tim Wise. It's a little paperback, only 155 pages long, so it shouldn't take too terribly long to get through.

To "get the ball rolling" here, I'm going to start a conversation.

What do you think Lois Lowry was trying to say about religion in Gathering Blue? Or does she even care about it?

To all of the many members of this supercool book club:

Our first "selection" will be Gathering Blue by Newberry Award winner Lois Lowry. Read it. Love it. Rip it apart.

Dude!

We spelled "Salinger" wrong in our interests.

Awesome!
